Tooth-Colored Fillings.

Composite fillings use a tooth-colored resin that bonds directly to your tooth structure, restoring shape and strength while blending naturally with your enamel. Dr. D'Alesio removes only the decayed material — no healthy tooth is sacrificed — and the result looks and functions like your original tooth.

A lot of people dread the drill — and that's totally normal. We keep things as quick and comfortable as we can, and we only remove what actually needs to go.

Appearance

What's actually happening

When a cavity forms, the decayed part of the tooth needs to come out — and then the space gets filled so the tooth holds its shape and strength. We use a tooth-colored resin called composite that bonds directly to your tooth structure. It's matched to your natural shade, so once it's polished up, it just looks like your tooth. We take out only what needs to go. That's the whole idea.

Why tooth-colored over silver

Silver amalgam fillings work fine, but they require removing a bit more healthy tooth to lock in place. Composite bonds to the tooth, so we can be more conservative — and it looks the part too. For most people, that's the better trade. If you have a very large cavity, we might talk through whether a crown makes more sense, and we'll lay that out clearly so you can decide.

What to expect at your appointment

1

Numbing the area

We get the area fully numb before anything else. If you've had a bad numbing experience before, tell us — we can slow down and make sure it's working.

2

Removing the decay

Only the decayed material comes out. Healthy tooth stays. We keep it as conservative as possible.

3

Placing and curing the filling

The resin goes in layers and each one is set with a small curing light. It takes only a few seconds per layer.

4

Shaping and checking the bite

We shape the filling to fit your bite and polish it smooth. You bite down on some paper and we adjust until it feels right.

Good to know

You may notice some sensitivity to cold or pressure for a few days — this typically settles on its own.
Avoid very hard or sticky foods for 24 hours while the tooth settles.
If the bite feels off after a day or two, call us — it's a quick fix.

Common Questions

Will I feel anything during the filling?

We numb the area before starting, so the procedure itself is typically no more than mild pressure. If at any point something feels sharp, raise your hand and we stop. That's how it works here.

How long does a composite filling last?

With regular brushing and checkups, composite fillings often last 7–10 years or more. We keep an eye on them at your routine visits and let you know if anything needs attention.

Are tooth-colored fillings as strong as silver ones?

For small to medium cavities, yes — composite is highly durable and bonds directly to the tooth, which actually strengthens the structure. For larger cavities, we may talk about whether a crown is the better long-term option. Either way, we'll walk you through it.

What are tooth-colored fillings called?

You'll hear them called composite fillings, composite resin fillings, or tooth-colored fillings — same thing. They're the standard at our office because they let us keep more of your natural tooth.
